Italian Food & Wine: “Di Gavi in Gavi”

An end of summer event in the city of Gavi you shouldn’t miss

Di Gavi in Gavi is an end of summer wine and food event in the city of Gavi, in the province of Alessandria. It’s a journey in stages amid show-cooking with multi-star-rated chefs and the discovery of products that are typical of these lands.

Let’s have an overview on all the local specialities. The Gavi wine, which is typical, unique, unrepeatable and recognisable! And the local Ravioli, that can be eaten in several ways: “at the touch”, naked and – of course – with wine.

We’re visiting “from Gavi in Gavi”
It’s an end of summer wine and food event in the city of Gavi, in the province of Alessandria.
It’s a journey in stages amid show-cooking with multi-star-rated chefs
and the discovery of products that are typical of these lands.
My friend Luigi and I travel around Gavi’s courts, the courtyards where it’s possible to sample the local specialities.
What are these biscuits called? Rose Saracene!
This gentleman is Maurizio. Good evening, may I dip?
It doesn’t look good for me to dunk my biscuit in your glass of Gavi…
Just because it’s my glass, otherwise Gavi goes very well with everything.
How many bottles of Gavi do you produce?
Thirteen million bottles, 1500 hectares of vineyards with 11 municipalities involved in production.
You are fixated with an indigenous vine, the cortese vine, but why here, precisely?
This is where the vine found the the perfect microclimate,
at a certain altitude, between 200 and 300 metres up and we’re about ten kilometres away
so that the salt of the sea reaches here and there is a natural sapidity to the wine that comes from the saltiness of the soil.
The adjectives used to describe Gavi are: typical, unique, unrepeatable and recognisable!
Do you get the recipe? The identity, the history, it is totally unique.
At this point I can’t resist, can I dunk my biscuit in this?
I’m interested in what there is to drink, but also in what there is to eat.
Gavi has a great personality, but also a great spirit of adaptation.
Getting to the next courtyard won’t be easy…
Thousands of people have arrived for the “Di Gavi in Gavi” event.
The biscuit was good, but is there something more to eat?
We are in the courtyard of the Templars. There’s a bit of everything here!
The 11 municipalities that produce the Gavi DOCG wine have brought their own products to this courtyard.
Do you recall the 11 municipalities that are part of the circuit?
Gavi, Serravalle, San Cristoforo, Parodi, Francavilla, Carrosio, Pasturana…
Time’s up! You left out Bosio, Novi, Capriata and Tassarolo…
If you knew them why did you ask me to tell you?
All of these good things are here thanks to the consortium that protects the Gavi, the Pro Locos (associations promoting local culture and tourism), the associations
and above all to the energy of the volunteers.
I’d like to taste the most typical thing you have.
It has to be the ravioli!
This is the source of the raviolo!
The strolling raviolo is something totally new.
To go “from Gavi in Gavi” with strolling ravioli is a great luxury,
but one has to keep in mind the traditions:
these ravioli are good but they they aren’t quite the orthodox ones.
Good morning sir! I see you’re eating ravioli!
Do you know how they’re eaten?
I am the Chancellor of the Obertengo Order of the Raviolo and of the Gavi.
Ravioli are eaten “at the touch”, that’s to say with the sauce of the meats with which they’ve been made.
Plain, just as they are, naked and uncooked.
And then ‘with wine’. Can I taste?
You’re now entitled to become a Knight of the Raviolo!
The Grand Master will proceed with your enthronement.
By the power invested in me by the statutes,
I appoint you a Knight of the Obertengo Order of the Raviolo and of the Gavi.
I recall the film Pretty Woman. Just as in that they would say “This is Hollywood” we say: “This is Gavi”.
These are the beneficial effects of the Gavi.
And as one who has drunk the Gavi, I stand up as best I can.
