The medieval city of Volterra

Spend one day in a bygone era!

by Lucia Scalzo

Volterra, a small medieval village in Pisa municipality, brings you back to a bygone era, with its alleys and old palaces made of stone. The city is surrounded by a breathless landscape, enhanced by the splendid Tuscany’s hills. Is a little jewel that must be visited in a sunny day of late Autumn, when colours suit the town more than ever.

Famous for alabaster’s extraction and manufacturing, the city is full of shops that sell objects with various forms and use: jewels, decorative objects and of course a lot of souvenirs.

I went to Volterra on a sunday of November with a friend that lives in Firenze. Sun, warm and many people around, a really pleasant walk. Beautiful shops, wonderful alleys and palaces and excellent typical food.

Although I sincerely suggest you to walk around the handicraft shops and the numerous alleys without a specific destination, you certainly have to see the Palazzo dei Priori, the medieval gates at the entrance of the ancient town, the Cathedral and the Baptistery.

Then you can rest in one of the restaurants with tables outside that you will find along the street, and let the waiter suggest you the plate of the day: you will not regret it!

We ordered a cutting board of cured meats, chees, mixed bruschette and paccheri with rabbit sauce. Perfect!
