Marostica is famous worldwide for the historical human chess game that takes place every two years in the second week of September in the town main square. This little town near Vicenza is known as “The city of chess”.
Come to the next Marostica chess game the 12, 13 and 14 of September 2014!
The event commemorates an historic match that took place in 1454, as we can read on the official website marosticascacchi.it:
The story is only partly legendary as it is confirmed by local traditions and by documents. It tells how Rinaldo d’Angarano and Vieri da Vallonara both fell in love with Lionara, daughter of Taddeo Parisio governor of the town. Parisio was a great Humanist and forbade the two ardent lovers to joust for his daughter’s hand, and suggested instead that the contest should be resolvered by a game of chess. Both young man were experts et the game; to console the loser Parisio promise to allow him to marry his sister Oldrada.
