Sicily by boat: Pantelleria island

The most south-eastern island in Italy

Pantelleria is the most south-eastern island in Italy and it belongs to region Sicily. Sailing round Pantelleria, it becomes apparent there is nowhere to come ashore. The coastline is so high and so jagged that the only possible place is the main port!

From here we can set off on an inland tour of Pantelleria. Let’s find the Lake of Venus with its sulphur water and its healty mud. Then let’s move on to Scauri Scalo where there are pools that have been dug out of the rocks where in some points the warm water meets the cold water of the sea. Pantelleria is an island of treatments!

Pantelleria is Italy’s most south-easterly island.
Sailing round the island it becomes apparent there is nowhere to come ashore.
The coastline is so high and so jagged that the only possible place is the main port.
That’s where we also find Armani’s black speedboat.
From here we can set off on an inland tour of the island.
Do we know where we have to go?
Let’s find the Lake of Venus with its sulphur water.
But this is really the Lake of Venus!
It looks like Lake Baikal, the Great Salt Lake or the Dead Sea.
This mud dries, turns grey and comes away leaving the skin beautiful.
I’d like some shade, a newsstand and some water-ice.
Let’s move on to Scauri Scalo where there are pools that have been dug out of the rocks.
In these pools there are points where the warm water meets the cold water of the sea.
It’s an island of treatments!
The excavations of Scauri Scalo date back to Roman times.
This was the centre of ceramic production.
Pantelleria, in fact, is a Byzantine name that comes from the word ‘plate’.
It is here that ceramic plates were manufactured for the entire area of the Mediterranean.
Now we’re off to go and have a look at another archaeological site with its own necropolis.
